4to (7.5 x 11 in.) 392 pages green cloth, original maroon morocco with new endpapers. Colored title, 29 chromolithographic plates by Harrison Weir. Internally the book is clean bright The plates are in great condition with the exception of a 1/4 " tear to the blank border of  three of the plates which does not extend into the images. The color plates all have their tissue protectors in place.  New Edition, Greatly Enlarged.

During the late nineteenth century in Europe, livestock breeding became a newly created fashion. Royalty, nobility and commoners competed for livestock prizes at agricultural shows. Poultry were toured in horse-drawn caravans over nearly impassable roads to entertain the crowds who flocked to see them. Debates were waged in the national press over the relative merits of one breed versus another.

Two beautifully illustrated books were presented to the public in 1873. The Illustrated book of Poultry by Lewis Wright, was illustrated by Ludlow (also available) and The Poultry Book by W. B. Tegetmeir was illustrated by Harrison Weir. Both of these publications set the standards of the poultry breeds, as well as illustrated art. The beautifully illustrated plates from both of these books have become very rare, since they are a favorite among interior designers and print galleries.

The illustrations are from the pencil of Harrison Weir and speak for themselves.
