"THE SPIRIT OF THE WOODS" is an enchanting botanical/art/ Victorian period piece - 1837 London. Rebecca Hey as an anonymous work authored and illustrated this very rare book. She also was the author of "THE MORAL OF THE FLOWERS". The deep rich hues and shade of green of the 26 delicately hand-colored plates are strikingly exquisite. This work is a true labor of love by a lady who discovered the spirit of the woods 170 years ago.
A very scarce copy of The Spirit of the Woods. Superbly Illustrated with 26 single-sided Hand Colored Plates. Published by Longman, Rees, Orme, Green & Longman, London, & M. Robinson, Leeds, 1837. The book measures 9.5 x 6.5 inches, and is hardbound with green leatherbacked cloth covered boards, having gilt decoration and titles to spine. Spine and covers worn. Corners bumped. Partly removed 1838 ownership inscription inside front cover. The book contains; Half-title Page, Hand Colored Frontispiece, Title Page, Preface, Contents, including, Oak, Beech, Scotch Fir, Holly, Weeping Willow, Mountain Ash, Yew, Olive, Cedar, Sorrowful Nyctanthes, Guelder Rose, Common Maple, Pyracantha, and many more. List of Color plates and Introduction. A delightfully written book often quoting from poetry. A total of 306 pages. Beautifully hand colored plates with tissue guards. Slight age staining around the edges, but generally in clean condition.
