THE LILAC THYRSACANTH. (THYRSACANTHUS LILACINUS.) ORIGINAL PRINT [PLATE
53.] Date: 1851-1852 A Hothouse Shrub, from TROPICAL AMERICA, belonging to the Natural Order of ACANTHADS. Excerpt from text, which is included along with a copy of the Title Page: SEPALS 5, subulate, equal, pilose. Corolla funnel-shaped, 4-lobed, inflated at the base, then contracted into a slender tube; its segments glandular inside; three oval, nearly equal, reflexed, the fourth erect, oblong, a-lobed, ciliated. Stamens 2 fertile, lying beneath the fourth petal; 2 others subulate, sterile, enclosed in the tube. Anthers fleshy, linear, 2-celled, with parallel nearly equal lobes. Ovary linear-oblong, seated on a roundish torus, 2-celled, many-seeded. Stigma minute, 2-toothed.".................. Flowering Plants. This series of magazines was published in London 1834-1849.
During the years of 1850-1852, Paxton along with John Lindley published the rare
three-volume work: PAXTON’S FLOWER GARDEN. Represented are many exotic species
especially fine Orchids. They are often compared to the early volumes of Warner
and Williams, Orchid Album. The print offered for sale here is from this first
edition, which is a completely different product to the 1882 color printed
edition frequently found. These prints were produced using a zincographic
process along with hand coloring and have the plate markings Pinx & Zinc. Condition: Excellent Vibrant color, with some very minor
spotting.
