JOURNAL DES JARDINS . LA BELGIQUE HORTICOLE
DES SERRES ET DES VERGERS
CHARLES MORREN VOLUME ONE INAUGURAL EDITION Belgium 1851
24 HAND COLORED CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS

This is VOLUME ONE (1851) of La BELGIQUE HORTICOLE. 486 Pages. This inaugural volume measures 6 " x 9 ". 8 vo. Bound in contemporary quarter dark green morocco, with gilded cover and pages. The twenty-four prints in this volume are beautiful, original, hand-colored botanical engravings of fruit and flowers, with bright vivid colors, depicted in brilliant color as seen in the photos below. G. Severeyns produced these plates. There is some very faint offsetting of the text to the back of a few plates which does not detract from their beauty.

The Ending of the nineteenth century produced magnificent publications brought about through the impetus of botanical exploration, which reached its peak just before the turn of the century. The body of art and science were tightly interwoven. It was a time when the natural sciences spawned the most artful expression of the printer's craft ever achieved.

During the 19th century Belgium became the center of flower and fruit cultivation on the European continent and a number of important publications were produced. LA BELGIQUE HORTICOLE began publication in 1851 and captured beautifully colored botanical chromolithographs. Ghent (Gand) was the center of Horticulture and market gardening. It is one of Belgium's oldest cities and the historic capital of Flanders. This inaugural edition offered here was lithographed and hand finished in Ghent Belgium also known as "The City of Flowers"
