Fabre, J.H. FABRE'S
BOOK OF INSECTS 1937- Color plates by renowned artist Edward Julius Detmold
New York Tudor 1937 Hardcover Quarto, xii, 271pp. First published in 1921, this
is the seventh printing of the 1935 new edition. The book is "retold from
Alexander Teixeira de Mattos' translation of Fabre's "Souvenirs
Entomologiques" by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell."There are 12 tipped-on
tissue-guarded and captioned color plates by renowned artist Edward Julius
Detmold, famous for his illustrations for Aesop's Fables, Arabian Nights and The
Jungle Book. The plates still have the original tissue overlay in perfect
condition. A superb contribution to the world of natural history, showing
individually the sacred beetle, the cicada, the praying mantis, penelopaeus
spirifex, the psyches, the Spanish copris, the white- faced dectitus, common
wasps, the field cricket, the sisyphus, Italian locusts, and the anthrax fly.
This is a particularly fine copy, brilliantly clean and unmarked, green cloth
with gilt decorations, unmarked except for the slightest of shelf-rubbing on the
bottom edge. Corners bumped/slightly worn to spine edge. Binding is solid and
pages are very bright and clean. Pages are heavy and good quality without any
rips or folds.
