This
is the "Popular Edition" reprint of the original 1873 classic THE
ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF POULTRY (also
available. Click here to see) which was illustrated with 50 gorgeous
chromolithographed plates. This edition is illustrated with 18 full-page b&w
plates "Specially prepared for this Edition" and 102 b&w line
illustrations in text. There were NO color plates issued with this edition which
originally sold for 10s 6d as compared to the "deluxe" edition with
color plates which then sold for £2 2s.
The
book was reprinted several times between 1880 and 1911. The Illustrated Book of
Poultry was part of the natural history series published by Cassell and Company
in
J.W.
Ludlow was an ornithological artist who specialized in domestic birds. He
illustrated several books between 1867 and 1886 on poultry and pigeons. His
poultry illustrations are considered classics and are widely reproduced in
posters today.
Lewis
Wright was a Victorian-era author, editor and poultry, pigeon and animal expert.
He played a major part in documenting old and rare breeds of poultry and
recording their histories. Wright was the subject of the 2001 book "Lewis
Wright and His Poultry" by Joseph Batty.
Bound
in original bright red cloth with embossed rooster, gilt lettering and gilt
design on spine. A very attractive production. An affordable alternative to the First
edition!
CONDITION: Front and rear hinges cracked due to typical thin endpapers but binding still solid, a minor thumb size faint stain on front cover, o/w a very attractive Very Good or better copy.
