This CD presents 42 high resolution digital BMP images from the 1841 edition of BRITISH BUTTERFLIES AND THEIR TRANSFORMATIONS. These images can be imported to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, PaintShop Pro, Adobe PhotoDelux, PrintMaster and other popular painting and drawing programs and printed on quality inkjet paper producing stunning results suitable for framing. Or for designing your own greeting cards, posters, brochures and calendars.

These are of particular interest as an Entomology study of Lepidoptera as well as Botanical art. These highly decorative plates are exquisitely hand colored, unusual in that the butterfly, chrysalis and caterpillar of each species is artfully displayed on the plant on which it lives & feeds. This presentation was later adopted by the British Museum. The 42 handsome superb original prints are becoming increasingly rare, since they are a favorite among interior designers and print galleries.


These attractive hand-colored antique engraved plates were transferred from the 1841 First Edition publication of "BRITISH BUTTERFLIES AND THEIR TRANSFORMATIONS". These highly decorative plates are exquisitely hand colored. The illustrations of groups of butterflies around bouquets of appropriate food plants and flowers are some of the most delicate. The prints on this CD are from the first edition, which has strong impressions not found in later, and displays nice strong color rather than the pale washes sometimes found. The originals measure 8 ½ " x 11", with bright vivid color scientifically correct and very beautiful. The hand coloring still intensely vivid and delicately applied has not been lost in these digital scans.

The print out size is the same size as the originals, if not enlarged or reduced. I have found that these Images print best on Ink Jet Matte paper. When printed directly from the CD, they are the actual size. (The same as the originals) and the result is an awesome print almost indistinguishable as a reproduction print, even when using a relatively inexpensive home ink jet printer.

This CD contains the entire collection of original images as well as a set which has been digitally enhanced in the transfer to CD as in the scan below. These web images are electronically watermarked, the CD images are not.
