This attractive original (not a reproduction) 119-year-old print is from the 1883 Belgique Horticole. . This stunning
triple-fold-out Botanical measures 9 ½ " x 17". Offered for auction is the original chromolithograph, with bright vivid colors on heavy stock paper. This print is botanically correct and very beautiful. The edges are untrimmed and the scan shows the area to be framed. The ORIGINAL DESCRIPTIVE TEXT (in French) is included.
These prints are unique, in that the actual year of production appears on the plate. This is a characteristic which is rarely found on antique botanicals

During the 19th century Belgium became the center of flower and fruit cultivation on the European continent and a number of important publications were produced. LA BELGIQUE HORTICOLE began publication in 1851 and captured beautifully colored botanical chromolithographs. Ghent (Gand) was the center of Horticulture and market gardening. It is one of Belgium's oldest cities and the historic capital of Flanders. This beautiful botanical offered here was lithographed in Ghent Belgium also known as "The City of Flowers"
The contributing artists: Cursin, Faguet, Stroobant, Godard, Bruno, deLongpre, dePannemaker, Riocreux, and Descamp are given high praises in GREAT FLOWER BOOKS 1700 - 1900 A Bibliographical Record of Two centuries of Finely-Illustrated Flower Books BySACHEVERELL SITWELL and WILFRID BLUNT "The works of these artists and others of the nineteenth century French school of botanical artists, and, these for delicacy and accuracy can hardly be excelled" p.61. The French artists are given high praise on the following pages of this noted Botanical Reference book: 61,79,83,88,96,103,111,159. Strobant, dePannemaker and Severens are listed as the chromolithographers of choice in France and Belgium during this period on pages: 70,77,89,93,101,103,148,159160,161.
